ANY PLAGIARIZED WORK WILL RESULT IN AN "F"-Turn-in only your work

The following is a breakdown of the above course requirements. There are fourteen quizzes--one for every chapter, and these are designed to test you on specific knowledge from the reading. I will give you a practice quiz on the syllabus and the first chapter so you will know what to expect. I will also be giving you TWO MIDTERM ESSAY questions. The first will cover chapters 1-8, and the second will cover chapters 9-15. The essay questions are designed to help you understand the subject in more depth and will address issues discussed in the Bulletin Board Questions. In addition, you will be assigned one question to answer on our class bulletin board; these answers serve as a "Discussion Lead" to which the class can direct comments. Finally, there is a 15% participation grade, as explained above, for your introduction/ checking-in, along with participating in at least 10 bulletin board discussions (not including your assigned question week).

ONE PRACTICE QUIZ (10 Points):

The Practice Quiz will get you up to 20 Points of Extra Credit. This quiz will be on the SYLLABUS and the MAIN POINTS of the essays in the first chapter. You can take this 20 Minute quiz as many times as you like until you get full credit. This is designed to give you practice with the technical aspects of BB, and to make sure you have read our syllabus carefully.

The other quizzes will be 15-30 questions from weekly chapters, to be completed in 30 to 45 Minutes (depending on the number of questions).

TWELVE CHAPTER QUIZZES (30 Points each, 360 total):

There will be a quiz posted for each chapter, beginning next week. You can take them at your own pace, though you should have the first half completed by the first midterm, and the second half for the last midterm. I will begin posting them in the next few weeks, with the practice quiz posted at the end of the second week. You can take the practice quiz as many times as you like until you get a perfect score. The other quizzes are also timed but can be taken only once--there will be from 15 to 30 chapter questions, specifics tba.

While there are 14 quizzes, you are only graded for 12 of them, designed to account for any technical difficulties or web server problems. You should take these on a secure connection so there are no interruptions.

PARTICIPATION (180 Points):

Introduction Post & Checking-in by the first week (30 pts); responding to Bulletin Board Posts at least TEN times (150 pts). To receive full credit, your comments should be addressed to the discussion points brought up by the Discussion Leader (those answering the assigned questions), and you should include examples from the reading that support your point. Be specific rather than vague in responding to the weekly discussion essays published by your fellow students.

ONE ASSIGNED QUESTION, ANSWER POSTED ON OUR BULLETIN BOARD (80 Points Each/ 160 Points Total):

I will assign each of you ONE WEEK for which I would like you to present insights into the week's reading, and we will begin this next week when I have a complete roster of our class. I will post a general question, and would like you to construct an answer that you can support with points from the assigned reading. The idea here is to make an argument, to have a point of view, and to support it with examples from the reading. ANSWERS SHOULD BE POSTED IN THE WEEK THEY ARE ASSIGNED (first week's reading will be due in the second week).

An "A" posting reveals a sophisticated knowledge of the reading, time spent thinking about class questions, and a well structured and persuasive argument. A "B" posting is a strong argument with some evidence presented; and a "C" posting reflects very general argument with some points from reading included. A "D" posting is a poorly supported argument, and a Fail reflects no informed knowledge of the subject.

Please see our Course Discussion Question Page for more information.

TWO MIDTERM IDENTIFICATION AND ESSAY EXAMS (120 points each/ 240 Total):

While the quizzes are designed to test specific knowledge gained from the reading, Midterm Exam Essays are designed to test your understanding of the significance of these ideas. I will post the midterm identification and essay questions in the 8thand 16th weeks, and participating in bulletin board discussions should prepare you for these questions.
