The following is a breakdown of the above course requirements. There are fourteen quizzes--one for every chapter, and these are designed to test you on specific knowledge from the reading, including a practice extra credit quiz. 12 of these 14 quizzes will count, and I will subtract your two lowest scores. I will also be giving you TWO MIDTERM ESSAY exams. The first will cover chapters 1-7, and the second will cover chapters 8-14. The essay questions are designed to help you understand the subject in more depth and will address issues discussed in the Bulletin Board Questions, where you will be assigned one question to answer formally--you will be leading the discussion. Finally, there is a participation grade, as explained above, for your introduction/ checking-in, along with participation in at least 10 bulletin board discussions (in addition to your assigned questions).

1-ONE PRACTICE QUIZ (20 Points):

The Practice Quiz will get you up to 20 Points of Extra Credit. This will include questions about the syllabus outlined on the Lecture/ Reading Guidelines page, along with questions about our course requirements, so please read the syllabus/ Class Webpage carefully.

2-PARTICIPATION (140 Points):

Introduction Post & Checking-in (40 pts); responding to Bulletin Board Posts at least TEN times (100 pts). Please note: Discussion Comments must be made in the week of the assigned discussion--you will not be given points for adding to discussions after the deadline--which is by Midnight on Sundays for each week. This question will be on the Extra Credit Quiz.

3-FOURTEEN CHAPTER QUIZZES (30 Points each, 360 total):

There will be a quiz posted for each chapter, beginning next week. You can take them at your own pace, though you should have the first half completed by the first midterm, and the second half for the last midterm. I will begin posting them in the next few weeks, with the practice quiz posted at the end of this week. You can take the practice quiz as many times as you like, and it is not timed, until you get a perfect score. The other quizzes will be timed--there will be 15 Matching Questions for each chapter, and you will have 30 minutes to complete each quiz. There will be information up on our Class "lecture/ Reading Guidelines" page regarding these quizzes.

Only 12 of these 14 quizzes will count, I will subtract your lowest scores. I do not reset quizzes.

4-ONE ASSIGNED BULLETIN BOARD QUESTION--DISCUSSION LEAD; questions and assignments will be posted on our webpage. (170 Points):

I will assign each of you ONE WEEK for which I would like you to present insights into the week's reading, and we will begin this next week when I have a complete roster of our class. I will post a general question, and would like you to construct an answer that you can support with points from the assigned reading. The idea here is to make an argument, to have a point of view, and to support it with examples from the reading. ANSWERS SHOULD BE POSTED IN THE WEEK THEY ARE ASSIGNED.

An "A" posting reveals a sophisticated knowledge of the reading, time spent thinking about class questions, and a well structured and persuasive argument. A "B" posting is a strong argument with some evidence presented; and a "C" posting reflects very general argument with some points from reading included. A "D" posting is a poorly supported argument, and a Fail reflects no informed knowledge of the subject. More information is posted on the Discusson Assignments and Questions pages.

5-TWO MIDTERM ESSAYS (150 points each/ 300 Total):

While the quizzes are designed to test specific knowledge gained from the reading, Midterm Exam Essays are designed to test your understanding of the significance of these ideas. I will post the midterm essay questions in the 8th/9th and 15th/16th weeks, and participating in bulletin board discussions should prepare you for these questions. These essays are by nature of the class, "open book." However, these are credit similar to in-class exams, so you should study, outine an answer, then sit down to complete it.

6. COC Learning Outcomes Test: A multiple choice test with basic U.S. History questions (30 points).
